This is an art problem, help!

This problem started out with a gift: 6 cubic meters of styrofoam.

We got a generous gift from Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch, which consisted of 6 cubic meters of styrofoam. What a beautiful material!

Though we never make sculptures, we were excited to explore what you can do with this amount of tempex. We experimented during a two-week residency in the Drie Mollen ‘s-Hertogenbosch. We played with the material, got loads of people thinking along, borrowed tools and tried all kinds of techniques.

The installation at Drie Mollen slowly grew with suggestions

The question: What would you do with 6 cubic meters of tempex? appealed to a lot of people. We experimented with the suggestions, but during our attempt of doing something positive with the material, we created more waste than sculptures… That was the point this gift became a problem.

This gift turned into a problem. πŸ™

Our artistic actions had too many negative consequences. Loose material that couldn’t be used for any other goals. Luckily styrofoam is a material which can be recycled very well. With that in mind, we decided to make an artwork for Afvalstoffendienst ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

We made a video about this process to display the dilemmas we faced and the return of the styrofoam into the recycling cycle.
